Red Foxes Salvage Split At Binghamton

March 25, 2009

Box Score

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Marist softball team split its third doubleheader of the season on Wednesday, this time against the Binghamton Bearcats. Marist dropped the first game, 7-6, before they held off the host school in the second game, 5-4. On the season the Red Foxes record went to 7-15 overall as they head into the conference portion of the schedule this weekend against Iona.

Senior Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) went 4-for-5 in game one with two RBIs and a run scored. She scored her second run of the day in game two as she went 1-for-4 at the plate. Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) hit her third home run of the season in the second game of the afternoon.

In the second game of the day, there was no score in the top of the third with one out, when Giordano reached base on an error. Freshman Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket, R.I.) singled to push Giordano to second. Green hit a three-run home run to left field to clear the bases.

After Binghamton scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, Marist promptly responded with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) hit the second Marist home run of the game as she drove in Green to put Marist ahead, 5-2.

The Red Foxes held off a comeback in the bottom of the seventh to hold on for a 5-4 victory.

Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) started game two and pitched 6.1 innings. She gave up just four hits and fanned six batters. Carpentier now has 302 strikeouts on her career and stands in fourth place all-time; she is now 4-7 this season.

In the first game of the afternoon, freshman pitcher Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) took to the circle for the Red Foxes. In the top of the first the Marist offense got Schell a one run cushion before she took the field. Giordano led the game off with a double, her 11th of the season. She scored on a Lamoureux fielder's choice.

After Binghamton pulled even in the bottom of the first to knot the score at one, freshman Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) hit her first home run of the season, a solo shot, to lead off the second inning. After an inning and a half, the Red Foxes held a 2-1 lead.

Marist expanded their lead in the third, to a 6-1 in the third. Senior Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) drove a single to center field which scored Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.) and Malloy. The next batter, Giordano, then came to bat and plated Pomes and McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.).

From that point, the Red Foxes were held to just three hits over the final four innings, after they compiled nine in the first three innings.

Binghamton scored the final six runs, highlighted by three runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth. Kelly Schuldt hit the game-winning home run in the sixth to put the Bearcats past the Red Foxes.

The Red Foxes will open their conference schedule on Saturday, March 28 at 1 p.m. as they host Iona for a doubleheader. The games will be played at the Softball Park at Garland Field.
