Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Marist softball team scored all four runs in the final three innings as the squad split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader at Canisius on Saturday afternoon. Canisius defeated Marist in game one, 8-4, but Marist rebounded with a 4-2 victory in game two at the Demske Sports Complex. Seven Red Foxes each had one hit in the game two victory.
In game one Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) and Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket, R.I.) each had two hits in the top two spots in the batting order. Giordano and Lamoureux each concluded the day with an RBI and a run scored each.
Marist trailed 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning in the second game of the twinbill. Sophomore McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) led the inning off with a single. She advanced to second on an Alana Woody (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) ground out. Freshman Alyxandra Ponce (Columbia, Md.) pinch ran for Campbell at second base. Classmate Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) drove Ponce in on a ground-rule double to center field.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Red Foxes would take their first lead of the game, as Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) scored an unearned run after Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.) reached on an error. Malloy reached base on a two-out single through the left side of the infield.
Marist scored two additional runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-1 lead. Woody led off the inning with a double to left field on the first pitch she saw. A Heather Young (Saugerties, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt put Woody on third base with one out. Woody scored the eventual game-winning run on a wild pitch. Young scored on a Giordano sacrifice fly for Marist's final run of the afternoon.
Canisius got a run back in the bottom of the seventh; however, Marist freshman pitcher Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) shut the door on the Golden Griffins. Schell allowed two hits and one walk in 2.2 innings of relief work to earn the win.
In the first game of the afternoon, the Golden Griffins jumped out to a 7-1 lead behind five fifth inning runs.
The Red Foxes looked to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh as Giordano and Lamoureux hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the inning. The home runs cut the Canisius lead to 8-4, the final margin, but Marist could get no closer.
Marist will conclude the regular season on the road on Tuesday, April 28 as the team will travel to the University of Stony Brook for a single game. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
