STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Marist softball team concluded its regular season on Tuesday afternoon with a single game at the University of Stony Brook against the Seawolves of the America East. The Red Foxes dropped a 6-1 decision in the regular season finale. Four different players each had a hit for the Marist offense, while seniors Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) and Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) accounted for Marist's run and RBI on the day.
Stony Brook (33-11) scored two runs in the third inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Kelly Oberto drove in a run on a single to center field. Both Crista Cerrone and Kelsi Fanelli scored in the frame.
The Red Foxes cut the lead to one, 2-1, in the top of the fifth. Pomes led off the inning with a bunt single. She advanced to second on a Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) base hit. After a Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) walk loaded the bases, Green hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Pomes.
The Seawolves added two insurance runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to ensure their Senior Day victory.
Marist will be idle as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) finishes the regular season this weekend. If the Red Foxes remain in one of the top four spots in the conference by the end of the weekend, Marist will play in the 2009 MAAC Championship at the Softball Park at Gartland Field from May 7-10 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Red Foxes have reached the championship game each of the last three seasons.
