BETHLEHEM, PA. - The Marist softball team dropped two games at Lehigh on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader. The final score of game one was 5-1, while the final score of game two was 7-1. The Red Foxes have now dropped their last five decisions.
Sophomore McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) hit her second home run of the season in the second game of the day. Senior Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.) and freshman Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) each had two hits for the Red Foxes.
After Lehigh scored their first run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second of game one, Marist responded with a run of their own. Senior Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) drove in classmate Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.), Green's 24 RBI of the season and Giordano's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) leading 29th run scored of the year.
Lehigh would put up two runs in the third and fifth innings each to reach the final score for game one, 5-1.
Freshman Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) took the loss in game one to fall to 3-10 this season. She threw a complete game, surrendered 10 hits, but did not walk a batter.
In game two, Lehigh was spotted a 5-0 lead when Marist notched their first run of the game in the top of the fifth. Campbell led of the inning with her second home run of the season, a solo shot to center field for the Red Foxes lone run in the night cap. After five innings of play, Lehigh held a 5-1 edge over the Red Foxes.
Marist will return to action on Thursday, April 10 at 3 p.m. The Red Foxes will host the Seton Hall Pirates of the Big East. The two teams met earlier in the season at the Sixth Annual UMBC Dawg Pound Classic.
