Box Score
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist softball team was swept by Seton Hall in a doubleheader at the Softball Park at Gartland Field on Thursday afternoon. The Pirates won the opener 5-1 before taking the nightcap 9-5. Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) and Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.) each hit a home run for the Red Foxes. Giordano was 3-for-5 in the two games with an rbi and three runs scored.
Game one got off to a rough start for Marist. Starting pitcher Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) and Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) combined on back-to-back base hits. Those two runners would be left stranded as Marist could not push across another run.
Both Schell and Seton Hall starter Kim Schweitzer cruised through the second and third innings, allowing only one baserunner between the two. The Pirates offense then came alive in the top of the fourth inning. The inning started with a Kealan Waldron solo home run that tied the game at 1-1. Schell then walked Pease and catcher Nicole Loewenstein, putting two runners on with one out. After a Leah Menichetti groundout advanced the runners, Michelle Reed hit an infield single to drive in Pease and give Seton Hall a 2-1 lead. Marist got a runner on base in the bottom of the fourth as Kinel drew a walk, but could not bring her around to score.
Seton Hall grew its lead in the top of the fifth inning. Brittany Schilllizzi singled up the middle to lead off the inning. Kristen Kaelin then drove her in with a home run over the right-centerfield fence, making the score 4-1. Waldron drew a walk and was pinch-ran for by Christie Jensen. Pease then singled to left field, putting two runners on base with no outs. With the bases loaded and one out, Schell got Menichetti to ground into a fielder's choice as McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) put out Jensen at home plate. Pease, however, came around to score on a wild pitch during Michelle Reed's at-bat for the Pirates' third run of the inning, putting Seton Hall ahead 5-1.
Marist did not score in the fifth or sixth innings. Campbell looked to spark a Red Fox rally in the bottom of the seventh with a single to center field, but Alana Woody (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) and Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) could not bring her around to score to end the first game. Schell took the loss for the Red Foxes, walking eight and striking out five in seven innings.
The Pirates put a crooked number on the scoreboard early in game 2. Reed and Nalin Bennett led off the game with back-to-back singles off of Marist starting pitcher Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.). Schillizzi then singled up the third-base line, scoring Reed. After Kaelin grounded out to Campbell at third base, Bennett scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0. Carpentier stopped the rally by striking out Waldron and Pease to get out of the inning.
Marist took the lead back in the bottom of the second inning. Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) led off the inning with a single up the middle. Kinel then tied the game at 2-2 with her xth home run of the season. Campbell followed up the Kinel blast with a single and Alyxandra Ponce (Columbia, Md.) did the same. Pomes then put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. After Giordano was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out, Lamoureux hit a fly ball to centerfield that was deep enough to score Campbell and put Marist ahead 3-2. The Red Foxes had a chance to score a couple more runs with runners at second and third but Green grounded out to Seton Hall pitcher Ashley Forsyth to end the inning.
Seton Hall had a chance to tie the game in the top of the third. Bennett drew a lead-off walk and stole second base. Waldron then singled through the left side with two outs to put runners on the corners. Carpentier worked out of the jam by getting Pease to ground out to third base. The Pirates took the lead back in the top of the fourth inning. Loewenstein walked to open the inning and was pinch-ran for by Jensen. Jensen stole second base as Stephanie Bontales struck out. Carpentier got Menichetti to fly out to centerfield for the second out of the inning. Reed then reached on a Campbell error, putting runners on the corners with two out. With Bennett at the plate, Reed stole second base. Bennett also reached on an error, scoring Jensen which tied the game at 3-3. Reed then scored on a double steal, putting Seton Hall ahead 4-3.
Marist tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Giordano singled to lead off the inning and stole second base. Green then singled up the middle to drive in Giordano. The Pirates broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning. Pease drew a lead-off walk and was sacrificed by Loewenstein to second base. Winn then doubled to left center, scoring Pease. Menichetti then singled to left field, driving in another run to make the score 6-4. Reed then singled to drive in Menichetti, putting Seton Hall ahead 7-4. After a Bennett walk, Schillizzi drove in Reed but Bennett was thrown out at home plate by Kinel. The Pirates then went ahead 9-4 on an rbi single by Waldron. Marist tried to comeback in the seventh, as Green hit a run-scoring single to make the score 9-5, but that would be as close as the Red Foxes would get in the nightcap.
The Red Foxes will be back in action at the Softball Park at Gartland Field on Saturday, April 11 with a 12 p.m. doubleheader against Siena. Marist will honor its six seniors prior to the first game of the day.
