SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Marist football team suffered a 17-10 loss to San Diego on Saturday in a Pioneer Football League contest. With 41 seconds to play, Sam Scudellari threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Doyle for the game-winning score.
Making his first career start, Marist sophomore quarterback Ray Fiumefreddo (Wayne, N.J.) on a fourth-and-goal play from the one in the second quarter.
Senior linebacker Nick Andre (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with nine tackles, including three for a loss of yardage. Junior safety Rory Foley (West Roxbury, Mass.) added seven tackles, including a sack.
The Red Foxes got on the scoreboard first with a 45-yard field goal by junior kicker Kevin Pauly (Rochester, N.Y.), which capped an eight-play, 42-yard drive that took 4:43 off the clock in the first quarter. Pauly's kick was the second longest in program history, trailing only his 46-yard kick at Sacred Heart two weeks earlier.
After San Diego's J.T. Rogan returned the ensuing kickoff to the Marist 18, the Red Foxes' defense stiffened and forced the Toreros' Mike Levine to kick a 28-yard field goal, which tied the game at three apiece with 2:17 left in the first quarter.
The Red Foxes took the lead with 5:36 left in the second quarter on Reilly's touchdown pass to Fiumefreddo, which capped an eight-play, 65-yard drive which took 5:10 to complete. Marist maintained the 10-3 lead until the final play of the third quarter, when Rogan's two-yard touchdown plunge tied the game at 10 apiece.
San Diego started what would be its game-winning drive with 2:36 remaining and the ball on its own 33. On the fourth play of the drive, Scudellari's 26-yard pass to Doyle provided the winning score.
San Diego improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in PFL play, while the Red Foxes fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the Pioneer League. Marist will return to action with a non-conference contest next Saturday, when the Red Foxes face Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
