POUGHKEEPISE, N.Y. - The Marist football team suffered a 14-10 loss to San Diego Toreros in a Pioneer Football League (PFL) contest on Saturday afternoon at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. San Diego scored the game-winning touchdown, the only score of the second half, with 30 seconds to play on a seven-yard pass from Mason Mills to Sam Hoekstra.
The Red Foxes were led by strong play on defense and special teams. Sophomore linebacker James LaMacchia (Bronx, N.Y.) paced the special teams with a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown, while classmate Joseph DeSimone (Bronx, N.Y.) compiled 127 all-purpose yards.
San Diego (2-5, 2-2 PFL) took the game's first possession 80 yards in 11 plays and scored a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. On the drive, Mills completed a pass for 23 yards to Godfrey Smith. Mills and Godfrey closed out the drive by connecting for the touchdown from 12 yards away, as Godfrey hauled in a pass that was initially deflected by Ramsey with 9:29 left in the first quarter.
On the ensuing Marist drive, the Red Foxes responded with a 20-yard field goal by sophomore Jason Myers (Chula Vista, Calif.) to cut the deficit to 7-3. The Red Foxes earned four first downs on the drive which stalled at the San Diego three-yard line, but covered 72 yards in 10 plays.
With 3:47 to play in the second quarter, LaMacchia received a 36-yard punt from Stan Shurson at the Red Foxes' 31-yard line. He broke through a number of Toreros and got to the sideline to score Marist's lone touchdown in the game. The Red Foxes took a 10-7 lead into the locker room.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Marist maintained its 10-7 lead into the final stanza. However, San Diego started its game-winning drive with 3:23 remaining in the game. Mills went 4-for-5 on the drive and threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Hoekstra to take a 14-10 lead. The winning drive covered 61 yards over the course of seven plays in 2:53.
Marist ran four plays in the final 25 seconds of the contest, but could not get further than its own 40-yard line.
The Red Foxes will return to action next Saturday, Oct. 23 at Jacksonville, which is 6-1 overall and 4-0 in PFL play. Kickoff is set for noon. In the only prior meeting between the two teams, Marist won a 31-27 decision in Poughkeepsie.
Notes: LaMacchia now has 2,018 career receiving yards, putting him just one yard away from tying and two from breaking the program record set by Guy Smith, who played at Marist from 2002-05. LaMacchia did become the second 2,000-yard receiver in program history. ... Foley now has 272 career tackles, and is just four away from tying and five away from breaking the program record set by John Healy III, who played at Marist from 2000-03. ... Senior punter Kevin Pauly (Rochester, N.Y.) had a 76-yard punt downed at the San Diego one-yard line in the fourth quarter. It was the longest punt in Pauly's career, and tied the longest in program history. Joe Macchia also had a 76-yard punt in 1998 against Fairfield.
