NEW YORK, N.Y. - Seniors Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Marcus von Nordheim (Munich, Germany) of the Marist men's tennis team each won their Round of 16 matches on the first day of the Columbia Fall Classic on Friday. Von Nordheim won his fifth straight singles match, while Greene snapped a two-match losing streak.
Both Greene and von Nordheim used straight set victories over Ivy League foes to earn a spot in the semifinals in the Flight B singles draw. Greene bested Princeton's Michael Lin, while von Nordheim prevailed over Rageev Deb-Fen of Columbia. Greene's final score was 6-2, 6-4, while von Nordheim defeated Deb-Fen 7-6 (7), 6-3.
Additionally, freshman Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) also defeated a Columbia Lion in the quarterfinals on Friday. Klassen got past Alex Lee, 6-4, 6-3. The win was Klassen's ninth in 12 matches to start his collegiate career.
In doubles action, senior Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Klassen advanced to the semifinals of the Flight B doubles draw on Friday. Pisecky and Klassen defeated Sho Matsumoto and Lee of Columbia 8-4. On Saturday, Pisecky and Klassen will face Princeton's Coleman Crutchfield and Ravi Yegya-Raman in the semifinals.
The Red Foxes will continue play at the Columbia Fall Classic on Saturday. Matches will consist of the doubles draws semifinals and singles draw quarterfinals and semifinals.
