WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Marist football team suffered a 14-7 defeat in a non-league game at Georgetown on Saturday at Multi-Sport Field in its season finale. Sophomore safety Nick Mainiero (Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y.) picked off a pair of passes in the contest.
Marist opened the scoring with 6:52 left in the first quarter, when junior running back Ryan Dinnebeil (River Vale, N.J.) scored a four-yard touchdown to cap a six-play, 50-yard drive. The score remained that way after the first quarter. However, just 56 seconds into the second quarter, Georgetown defensive end Andrew Schaetzke intercepted a pass and returned it 24 yards to the Marist 28. Six plays, Philip Oladeji scored a one-yard rushing touchdown, and the ensuing extra point tied the game at seven apiece.
With 3:37 left in the second quarter, Dalen Claytor scored a 17-yard rushing touchdown to put the Hoyas ahead, and Brett Weiss' extra point made the score 14-7.
In the waning seconds of the first half, Marist drove down to the Georgetown five-yard line. However, on a second-and-goal play, freshman quarterback Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.) was intercepted by Georgetown linebacker Robert McCabe to end the drive. Looney was subbing for junior quarterback Tommy Reilly (Marlton, N.J.), who left the game due to injury earlier in that drive.
On the final play of the third quarter, Georgetown faced third-and-goal from the Marist four. However, Mainiero intercepted a pass in the end zone to end that drive. After the Red Foxes were forced to punt on their ensuing drive, Georgetown started its next drive at midfield. On the third play of the drive, Mainiero intercepted a pass in the flat and returned it 53 yards to the Georgetown 15. The Red Foxes, however, were unable to capitalize as two penalties and a sack moved the ball back to the Georgetown 38, and the drive ended with a punt. The Red Foxes did not reach the red zone for the rest of the game.
Marist outgained Georgetown 303-286 and also held a 34:42-25:18 edge in time of possession. Reilly was 9-for-14 for 136 yards and one interception, and broke the single-season program records for completions and attempts in the contest. Looney was 11-for-22 for 96 yards and two interceptions, and also led the Red Foxes with 26 yards rushing. Junior wide receiver Kevin Fitzpatrick (Columbia, Md.) led the Red Foxes in receptions and receiving yards with six and 77, respectively. Defensively, senior safety Rory Foley (West Roxbury, Mass.) had a team-high 10 tackles and added a pass break-up.
Marist concluded the season at 3-8; Georgetown finished at 4-7.
