KISSIMMEE, FLA. - The Marist softball team fell short in a 4-1 loss to Cleveland State on Friday morning at the Fortune Road Softball Complex as a part of the 2010 Rebel Spring Games. Sophomore Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) drove in the Red Foxes' lone run on the day on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning that scored freshman Danielle Koltz (Chenango Valley, N.Y.).
Four different Marist players notched hits in the game - Koltz, junior McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) and freshman Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) hit her team-leading fifth double of the season.
The Vikings jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Katelyn Ciminelli scored Jessica Burt on an RBI single to center field. Cleveland State boosted its lead to three runs when Tess Sito hit a two-run home run to left center field.
The Red Foxes had two on with nobody out in the bottom of the second, but the bottom third of the Marist lineup was retired in order to alleviate the threat.
Koltz led off the Marist half of the sixth with a single through the left side. She advanced to third on a Malloy double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Koltz tagged up on a DiVirgilio fly out to left field for Marist's only run of the game.
Sophomore Alanna Woody (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) took the loss, her third of the season. Woody gave up three earned runs and four hits in 2.1 innings of work.
