April 10, 2010

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Marist softball team was swept in its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon by Rider at Herb/Joan Young Field. Marist lost the first game 8-0 in five innings and came up short, 8-4 in the second game. The Red Foxes posted all four of their runs in the fifth inning of game two.

Five different Red Foxes notched a hit in game two, while sophomore Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y.) had her first multi-RBI game in a Marist uniform. Corriss drove in two runs during the top of the fifth.

Rider tallied runs in each of the first three innings of the second game of the day. The Broncs notched three in each of the first and second innings and one in the third to get out to a 7-0 lead.

Marist cut into the Rider lead in the top of the fifth as five of the first six batters that went to the plate reached base. Freshman Alyxandra Ponce (Columbia, Md.) tallied her first collegiate extra base hit, a double, to left center field which scored Lausch.

Corriss stepped into the batters' box with runners on second and third. She continued the trend with a double to right center field. Her third double of the season scored Durant and Ponce to cut the Broncs lead to 7-3. Corriss came around to score on a Lauren Napoli (Guilderland, N.Y.) single to right field. The RBI was Napoli's first of the season and collegiate career. Following the half inning the Red Foxes trailed by three, 7-4.

Rider notched an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to reach the final score of 8-4.

In game one, the Marist offense got just five walks in the five inning contest as it was no-hit by Rachael Matreale. Rider tallied three runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Marist moved to 4-20 overall and 0-2 in the MAAC, while Rider stands at 10-18-1 and 4-0 in conference play.

The Red Foxes will continue their 13-game road trip on Tuesday, April 13. Marist will travel to Hempstead, N.Y. for a single game with the Hofstra Pride. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. on Long Island.
