Softball Swept At Iona, 10-2 In Game One, 5-0 In Game Two

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist softball team was swept in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader at Rice Oval on the campus of Iona College. The Red Foxes dropped game one 10-2 in six innings, while the second game favored Iona 5-0. Sophomore McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) had two hits apiece in games one and two respectively.

Corriss finished the first game 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, a bunt single and a double. In the night cap, Campbell had two of Marist's three hits on the day. Both of her hits were singles.

In the first game of the afternoon, Iona jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Allyssa James scored on a base hit by Mel Gettins. On the play Gettins tried to stretch the base hit into a double, but was thrown out by centerfielder Alyxandra Ponce (Columbia, Md.). Ponce got the outfield assist, while junior Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) got the putout.

Marist (4-25, 0-6 MAAC) answered with a two spot in the top of the fourth. Corriss led the inning off with a double to left field. After Malloy singled to left field, to put runners on the corners, the pair scored on singles by Christina Lausch (Lancaster, Pa.) and Danielle Koltz (Chenango Bridge, N.Y.) respectively.

Iona took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth as it plated six runs and sent 11 batters to the plate in the contest. Marissa Newman delivered a two RBI single to left field. The Gaels had the bases loaded on two occasions.

In the night cap, the Gaels put up two runs in the third inning, including a leadoff home run by Jodi Petersen. James also scored a run on a sacrifice fly by Mel Gettins.

Iona (20-15, 8-0 MAAC) added three runs on four straight hits in the fifth inning. James had a two RBI double which scored Petersen and Eileen McCann. Kyle drove in James just one batter later to cap the inning.

Koltz started game one and suffered the loss. She fell to 1-5 on the season. Koltz struck out three batters, two of which were sent to the dugout looking.

In game two, Emily Osterhaus (Suwanne, Ga.) worked her way out of jams in the first and second innings, but succumbed to the Gaels offense in the latter stages of the game.

Marist will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 20 when it wraps up a 13-game road trip at La Salle. A doubleheader, game one is slated to begin at 3 p.m. in Philadelphia.
