PHILADELPHIA, PA. - The Marist softball team used the first inning of each game to take early leads, but five-run sixth innings in both games put the La Salle Explorers past the Red Foxes 11-6 and 10-4 in Tuesday's twinbill. Three Red Foxes hit home runs on the day. In game one, freshman Danielle Koltz (Chenango Valley, N.Y.) put the Red Foxes ahead with her second home run of the season and classmate Christina Lausch (Lancaster, Pa.) regained the lead for Marist with her blast to left-center. Sophomore Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) followed in game two with her first home run on the year.
DiVirgilio went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored on the day. Koltz recorded a hit in both games as well.
In the first contest, the Red Foxes opened strong with a four run first inning. Sophomore McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error and classmate Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) walked to load the bases with no outs. Two batters later, Lausch followed with a sacrifice fly to score Corriss from third and put the Red Foxes up 1-0. With two outs and runners on first and second, Koltz homered to left-center for three RBIs and the 4-0 lead.
La Salle responded in the bottom of the first with five runs to take a 5-4 lead into the second. Shannon Skomoruchac highlighted the inning for the Explorers with a three-run home run to left field.
After a quiet second inning, the Red Foxes used the long ball to regained the lead, 6-5, in the third when Nicole DiVirgilio doubled and Lausch brought her home with the first extra base hit of her career, a two-run home run to left-center.
After tying the game at 6-6 in the third inning on Laura Gallagher's RBI single, the Explorers took command in the sixth with a two-RBI double by Heather Brabazon followed by a two-run single off the bat of Gallagher. La Salle scored five runs in the inning to reach the final score.
In game two, the Red Foxes again took the lead in their first time up to bat. Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Ga.) reached on a fielding error and Malloy doubled Osterhaus in to put Marist up 1-0. It was Malloy's team-leading 11th double of the season.
The Explorers answered in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own. Gina Massaro scored on a groundout by Angelina Bisbiglia, and Erica Vile followed with an RBI single to plate Shepherd and give La Salle a 2-1 advantage.
After Marist's starting pitcher Alanna Woody (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) held the Explorers scoreless for three innings, La Salle broke through for three more runs in the fifth. Liz Reed and Shepherd both hit solo home runs in the inning to put the Explorers up 5-1.
Marist responded in the top of the sixth with three runs to cut the deficit to 5-4. Corriss was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Malloy singled Corriss to second and DiVirgilio cleared the bases with a three-run home run to bring the Red Foxes within one run.
La Salle again used a five-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach and earn the final score of 10-4. Vile capped off the scoring with a two-run home run to left-center.
Marist will return home on Saturday, April 24 as it hosts Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon.
