NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Marist softball team dropped the second game of a doubleheader at Columbia by the score of 5-2 at the Columbia Softball Stadium. The Red Foxes had the tying run on third base in the top half of the fifth inning. Freshman Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Ga.) suffered her third loss of the season in the circle. The sweep in the twinbill marks the second straight this season for Marist.
Sophomore Lindsay Durant (Martinsville, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate, while four other players had a base hit in the game. Freshmen Sarah Carmody (Camarillo, Calif.) and Danielle Koltz (Chenango Valley, N.Y.) each notched doubles in the game.
Columbia got out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Maggie Johnson hit a two-run home run to cap the inning. Dani Pineda scored the first run of the game after she hit a two-out double down the left field line.
The Red Foxes immediately cut the lead to two in the top of the second. Durant scored freshman Christina Lausch (Lancaster, Pa.) on an infield hit to cut the Lions lead to 3-1. Lausch led off the frame with a base hit. She now has hits in consecutive games for Marist.
Osterhaus retired nine straight batters from the last out of the first inning until there were two outs in the fourth. She retired the side in order in the second and third innings.
The Red Foxes got the lead to one in the top of the fifth when the score was cut to 3-2. Sophomore Alyxandra Ponce (Columbia, Md.) scored on a pinch-hit double by Carmody. Sophomore Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y.) landed at third base on the play. The next two Marist batters both made outs to end the threat for the Red Foxes.
Columbia added two additional runs in the sixth inning to reach the final margin of victory.
Marist will continue its 13-game road trip on Thursday, April 8, when the Red Foxes travel to Hamilton, N.Y. for a doubleheader with Colgate. First pitch in the twinbill is slated for 3 p.m. Marist leads the all-time series with nine wins, six losses and a tie.
