Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Sophomore Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) of the Marist softball team hit a two-out bases clearing double in the bottom of the third to propel the Red Foxes to a 3-2 victory over the first-place Canisius Golden Griffins in game two of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader on Saturday. Marist dropped game one 2-0.

With the bases loaded and trailing 2-0, DiVirgilio drove a ball down the fight field line which scored sophomores Alyxandra Ponce (Columbia, Md.), and Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.). DiVirgilio's hit was just one of three on the game for the Red Foxes.

The Golden Griffins got on the board in the top of the third. Katie Lancellotti drove in Michelle Fridey to account for Canisius' second run of the frame.

In game one, Canisius (32-17, 13-3 MAAC) got on the board early, plating a run each in the first and second innings. In the first, with two outs, Fridey singled and stole second. After an intentional walk to Paige Freiberger, Lancellotti singled to left field to bring Fridey home. In the top of the second, Canisius added the final run of the game when Lauren Hope singled in pinch runner Lauryn Chris.

The Red Foxes put pressure on Golden Griffins' starter, Caroline Main, early but were unable to push runs across. With one out in the bottom of the first, McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) to end the threat.

Marist (9-34, 3-11 MAAC) freshman Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Ga.) pitched a complete game, giving up eight hits and two runs while striking out eight in her third consecutive quality start. In game two, classmate Koltz picked up her third win of the season and threw a complete game, seven innings. She allowed six hits and two runs - neither was earned.

Main earned the win for the Golden Griffins, holding the Red Foxes to three hits and one walk over seven innings. Amanda Baun struck out five and walked one in her game two loss. She threw a complete game of six innings.

The Red Foxes will conclude their 2010 regular season on Sunday, May 9 at noon at the Softball Park at Gartland Field as they host the Niagara Purple Eagles in a MAAC doubleheader. Prior to the first game of the day, the Marist Athletics Department will recognize the team's lone senior Alanna Woody (Clinton Corners, N.Y.).
