POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist softball team closed out its season on Sunday with a doubleheader split against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Niagara at Softball Park at Gartland Field. After dropping the first game 10-3, the Red Foxes rebounded for a 5-3 triumph in the second game.
In game two, the Red Foxes scored all of their runs in the third inning, and all came with two outs. After sophomore center fielder Alyxandra Ponce (Columbia, Md.) reached on a single, sophomore catcher McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) to put Marist up for good at 3-2. Sophomore second baseman Brittany English (Wilton, Conn.) followed with a two-run single, which scored both Lausch and sophomore first baseman Lindsay Durant (Martinsville, N.J.).
The Red Foxes finished with eight hits in the contest, as Campbell and Lausch led the way with two apiece.
Freshman Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Ga.) pitched a complete game to earn the victory for the Red Foxes. Osterhaus scattered eight hits, issued just one walk and struck out five for her third victory of the season.
For Niagara in the second game, designated player Teresa Healy went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. She was the only Purple Eagle to have a multi-hit game.
In game one, Niagara started the scoring with a run in the first, and then added three more in the third and fifth to take a 7-0 lead. The Red Foxes bounced back with three runs in the sixth. DiVirgilio and Campbell singled, and then Lausch was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. A single by freshman catcher Sarah Carmody (Camarillo, Calif.) drove home DiVirgilio. Sophomore right fielder Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) then hit a sacrifice fly, which plated Campbell to make the score 7-2. Ponce was later hit by a pitches with the bases loaded to force home Lausch and cut Marist's deficit to 7-3. Niagara, however, bounced back to score three times in the seventh.
The Purple Eagles outhit the Red Foxes 13-9 in the first game. First baseman Jen Hare led the way by going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. For Marist, Campbell, Carmody and Ponce had two hits apiece.
Julie DiMatteo pitched a complete game for the Purple Eagles to earn the victory, and struck out eight. For Marist, senior Alanna Woody (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) went the first five innings and took the loss.
Marist concluded its season at 10-35 overall and 4-12 in the MAAC; Niagara is 21-20 overall and 10-6 in conference.
Prior to the game, the Red Foxes honored seniors Terah Paluba (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and Woody as part of the program's Senior Day ceremony.
