PROVIDENCE R.I. - The Marist men's tennis team wrapped up play at its first fall tournament on Sunday, the Brown Invitational, and three freshmen won their first collegiate tournaments. Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada), Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) and Bradley Royes (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) won the main draws in Flights 7, 8 and 10, respectively.
All three players won their finals matches in straight sets. Reznek defeated Dave Yovanoff of Brandeis 6-2, 6-3, and Klassen prevailed over Enrique Moreno 7-5, 6-4. Royes posted the most one-sided win of the Red Foxes results on Sunday with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Bucknell's Mark Malloy.
In addition to the main draw victories for the three-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) champions, Marist also got a win in the back draw from senior Marcus von Nordheim (Munich, Germany) in Flight 5. On Sunday, von Nordheim notched a 6-4, 7-5 win over Ike Krio. Kiro plays for the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Reznek, Klassen and Royes have each started their collegiate careers on a three-match winning streak in singles. Klassen has won in all six of his outings, which includes three doubles victories over the weekend.
The Red Foxes return to the courts on Friday, Sept. 24 in the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Collegiate Open. The tournament will be played at the US Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. A three-day event, Marist will play at the event through Sept. 26.
