SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
The Marist football team suffered a 13-7 loss in its season finale at San Diego
in a Pioneer Football League (PFL) contest on Saturday. Playing in a torrential
downpour for most of the game, the Red Foxes ended their season at 4-7 overall
and 3-5 in the PFL.
A stout Marist defensive effort saw the Red Foxes permit
just 145 yards of total offense, including just 46 in the second half. Senior
linebacker Ryan Cronan (Hampton,
N.H.) led Marist with nine tackles, while junior defensive end Terrence Fede (Nyack, N.Y.) had six
stops and a pass break-up. Both Cronan and Fede had a tackle for a loss of
yardage.
San Diego opened the scoring with 2:11 left in the first
quarter, as Kenny James scored on a one-yard touchdown run to cap a 12-play,
43-yard drive. Mike Levine's extra point gave the Toreros a 7-0 lead. The
Toreros' advantage reached 13-0 when Mason Mills completed an eight-yard
scoring strike to Brandon White.
On its third drive of the second half, Marist faced a
fourth-and-one from the San Diego 27. Senior quarterback Tommy Reilly (Marlton, N.J.) lofted a pass a junior tight end Anthony Calcagni (Thornwood, N.Y.), who
hauled it in and reached the end zone. The extra point by junior kicker Jason Myers (Chula Vista, Calif.) brought
Marist to within 13-7 with 4:14 left in the third quarter.
On their next drive, the Red Foxes moved the ball to the
San Diego nine after a 13-yard completion from Reilly to junior wide receiver Bartley Leneghan (North Royalton,
Ohio). However, the Red Foxes weren't able to advance any further, as the team's
next four plays resulted in a two-yard rushing loss followed by three straight
incompletions.
Leneghan led Marist with four receptions and 64 receiving
yards, and sophomore running back Atiq
Lucas (Coram, N.Y.) had 24 rushing yards on nine carries.
San Diego improved to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the
PFL. Safety Loka Kanongataa had five tackles and an interception. Linebacker
Joe Martin had two interceptions.
