SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The #20 Marist women's water polo team captured 15th place at the 2011 UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Sunday after it split a pair of games. The Red Foxes fell to Cal State Bakersfield their first matchup of the day, but rebounded with a 10-4 win over Sonoma State. The Red Foxes held the Seawolves scoreless in the first half en route to their first victory of the season.
Senior Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) led Marist (1-3) with five goals on the day, four of which came against Sonoma State. Junior Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.) tallied a hat trick against the Seawovles. Four others had two goals apiece on the day including sophomores Mackenzie Maynes (Newcastle, Wash.) and Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.), and juniors Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) and Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.).
The Red Foxes jumped out to a four-goal halftime lead after shutting out Sonoma State in the first half of the 15th-place contest. Marist put 18 shots on the cage in the game and forced Seawolves' goalkeeper Kelsey Goode to make eight saves in the match. Conversely, freshman netminder Kaitlyn Farley (Wilton, Conn.) turned away one Sonoma State shot for Marist.
Earlier in the day against Cal State Bakersfield, Marist was trailing 4-3 after one quarter of play, but responded with two goals in the second period to take a 5-4 halftime lead. However, the Runners outscored the Red Foxes 9-4 in the second half to take a 13-9 victory.
In the game, Gary made a career-high seven saves for Marist.
The Red Foxes return to the pool in their home opener next weekend when it hosts the Marist Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 19-20. Marist will take on club teams Toronto and DDO on Saturday, and round out the tournament with matches against DDO, Harvard and Hartwick on Sunday.
