Final Stats
QUEENS, N.Y. - The Red Foxes fell in their final non-conference game of the regular season to St. John's by a score of 7-6. Travelling to Queens to take on the Red Storm of the Big East Conference, Marist's six run late inning comeback fell one run short. Outfielders Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y.) and Christina Lausch (Lancaster, Pa.) led the offense as both had two hits, one RBI and a run scored on the day. Junior Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) had a team-high two RBIs.
After each team put zeroes on the board in the first inning, St. John's broke through in the bottom of the second as the Red Storm put together four singles and a home run to plate six runs. They increased their lead as they pushed across their seventh run in the third.
Down 7-0, Marist started their comeback in the fifth inning as the first three batters; Lausch, freshman Nicole Van Loan (Kingston, N.Y.) and Corriss all reached. After a double play looked to slow the offense down, DiVirgilio stepped up and ripped a double to right center field, scoring Van Loan and Corriss.
With the score 7-2, the offense went back to work in the sixth as freshman Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) doubled to lead off the inning. She advanced to third on a single by sophomore Danielle Koltz (Chenango Bridge, N.Y.). With runners on the corners, freshman Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) singled through the right side and scored Zahka. Koltz came around to score as the next batter Lausch rocketed a single up the middle to bring the score to 7-4.
After a Lausch steal of second and Van Loan walk, the bases were loaded with Corriss stepping to the plate. Drawing the count full, she took ball four and the free pass to first base, thereby forcing Klemmer in for the Red Foxes' fifth run of the afternoon. Run number six came on a wild pitch that allowed Lausch to sprint in from third base. Unfortunately for Marist this was their final run of the game.
With the win St. John finishes their season with a 20-30 record, while Marist falls to 31-19. The Red Foxes will be in action tomorrow afternoon at Gartland Park as they host Fairfield in their final MAAC doubleheader of the regular season. The teams will be fighting for MAAC Tournament seeding as Fairfield currently sits in first with an 11-2 conference record. Marist is in second with an 11-3 record. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
