LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Sophomore
Grace Hill had a match-high 19 kills and a .486 hitting percentage and the Red Foxes came back to defeat Rider University 3-1 (15-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-10) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match Saturday afternoon.
For the match, Marist hit at a .310 clip, while holding the Broncs to a .225 hitting percentage, and had 12 service aces. Redshirt senior Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) had 11 kills and tied with freshman Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) for team-high honors with 15 digs. Junior Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) had a match-high 25 assists and sophomore Audra Brady finished with a double-double with 24 assists and 14 digs.
"We were able to rebound from a slow start and play closer to the level of which we are capable of playing," head coach Tom Hanna said. "We did a better job of attacking as the match went on."
The day started poorly for Marist as Rider jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set and never looked back. A service ace by Chelsea Kennedy (Arcadia, Calif.) brought the Red Foxes within three at 13-10, but that is as close as they would get. The Broncs would score eight of the final 10 points of the set to win 25-10. Marist hit only .149 for the set, while Rider hit .375.
The Red Foxes would turn things around after that however. A kill by senior Leeann Harridsleff (Simi Valley, Calif.) gave Marist their first lead of the match at 3-2. After Rider closed the lead to 9-6, the Red Foxes scored 10 of the next 13 points to take a commanding 19-9 lead. Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) started the run off with a kill, and Stoiberg added two kills and had back-to-back service aces. A kill by Hill, her third straight point for Marist, closed the set. The Red foxes hit .406 for the set.
The third set was the closest of the match. Hill tied the score at 3, kick-starting a 6-0 Marist run that included three service aces by Kayla Burton (Kissimmee, Fla.) to put the Red Foxes ahead 8-3, and they would not trail the rest of the match. Overall, Marist had five service aces in the set. After Rider scored consecutive points to close in at 24-21, another kill by Hill gave the Red Foxes the set and the lead in the match.
Marist took control early in the fourth set, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead on back-to-back kills by Hill and another service ace by Burton, her fourth of the match. After Rider made a brief comeback, Hill had two more kills and a service ace as the Red Foxes opened up an 11-2 lead. A service ace by Stephanie Robinett (Sugar Land, Texas), and kills by Harridsleff and Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) were part of four consecutive points by the Red Foxes that closed out the set and the match. Marist hit .500 for the set and held the Broncs to just .034.
The Red Foxes complete their first weekend of MAAC play with a 2 p.m. match at Loyola on Sunday afternoon.
