NEW HAVEN, CONN. - In a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon, the Marist men's soccer team (4-2-1) lost to Yale (3-2-1) by a score of 7-0. Junior Stephan Brossard (Port Washington, N.Y.) led a Red Fox offense that registered 22 shots, with five individual attempts and two on goal.
Marist came out and took control in the early portion of the game as they manufactured quality scoring chance after scoring chance during the first 10 minutes. Following a wide Brossard shot, sophomore James Curley (Clifton Park, N.Y.) put a shot on target that Yale's goalkeeper Bobby Thalman saved. Five minutes later, Curley put another shot on net, which Thalman stymied once again.
The Red Foxes' period of dominance in Yale's defensive end concluded with back-to-back shots by Brossard and senior Troy Confessore (Kendall Park, N.J.). Confessore's attempt was stopped by Thalman in the keeper's third save of the game at 8:52.
Yale broke through on the offensive end as the Brad Rose notched his team's first goal at 15:52. Over the next 12 minutes, Rose, Peter Jacobson, Milan Tica and Jenner Fox would all add to the goals to stretch their advantage to 5-0 at 27:24.
On the strength of the five goal streak, the Bulldogs had a 13-10 advantage in shots at the half.
Coming out of the half, the Red Foxes continued looking to get on the scoreboard as the team had two shots and two corner kicks in the first three minutes of action.
A Charlie Paris goal in the 49th minute increased Yale's lead to six.
Over the next 15 minutes, Marist registered six shots with two being saved by Thalman, one blocked by a defender and a Josh Faga (Rochester, N.Y.) boot finding the crossbar.
Yale scored the final goal of game in the 66th minute as Jenner Fox notched his second tally of the match.
The Red Foxes closed out the game with another four shots and four corner kick opportunities.
For the match, Marist outshot Yale by a 22-18 margin though the Bulldogs were able to put 11 of their attempts on goal versus five for the Red Foxes. Marist also led in corner kick opportunities at 11-7.
After the game head coach Matt Viggiano remarked that he "was disappointed with the outcome of the game, as well as with the lack of intensity and edge that his team competed with. Coming off three weeks of strong performances, the fact that we didn't meet Yale's intensity came back to bite us. This game was definitely a wake up call."
The Red Foxes will next be in action on Wednesday, Sept. 21 when they travel to Fordham for a 7 p.m. matchup.
