POUGHKEEPSIE,
N.Y. - On an
afternoon where freshman Jason Ruddy etched his name in the program's record
book and two seniors competed in their final home meet, the Marist men's
swimming and diving team unfortunately fell to Seton Hall of the Big East
Conference. The Pirates, who came into the meet with an 8-2 record won with a
final score of 159-139. The Red Foxes won seven events on the afternoon,
including three by Ruddy (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) and two by sophomore Sean Molloy
(Slingerlands, N.Y.).
The
200-yd medley relay team of freshmen Dylan Cummings (Midland Park, N.J.), Evan
Uy (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii), Ruddy and John Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) started the
meet off fast for the Red Foxes as they defeated Seton Hall's "A" team with a
time of 1:38.00.
Ruddy
carried his earlier success into individual events as he went three-for-three
in the 100- and 200-yd butterfly and 200-yd IM races. The 200-yd fly was his
first event and he turned in a performance of a lifetime as he flew to a 7.54
second victory with a final time of 1:52.11. Mark Esolen's mark of 1:52.29 had
stood atop the Marist record books since 2008. The freshman rounded out his
afternoon with back-to-back victories over Seton Hall's Ryan O'Shaughnessy in
the 100-yd fly with a time of 52.44 and in the 200-yd IM at 1:58.32.
Molloy
continued his strong sophomore campaign in diving action as he swept the boards
with a 285.67 showing in the 1-meter and a 297.75 effort in the 3-meter.
Freshman Jacob Baker (Shavertown, Pa.) put pressure on Molloy in the 1-meter as
he fell by just 14.62 points with a final total of 271.05.
Uy
was the third Red Fox to earn an individual win as he swam to victory in the
100-yd breaststroke. Uy won the race by 1.28 seconds with a final time of
1:00.78.
The
squad had two swimmers barely miss out on victories as Nick Spinella (Franklin
Square, N.Y.) was out touched in the 100-yd backstroke by 0.06 with a time of
52.20 and Spitzer fell in the 50-yd sprint by .17 at 22.22.
Prior
to the meet, the Marist Athletic Department recognized seniors Joe Papiro
(Southbury, Conn.) and Patrick Shea (Peabody, Mass.) for their contributions to
the program during the last four years.
After
today's regular season ending meet the team will be off for 18 days in
preparation of the MAAC Championships that begin on Thursday, Feb. 16 in
Buffalo, N.Y.
