EDISON, N.J. - The Marist water polo team scored four goals in the final period but fell just short in their comeback attempt, falling 10-7 to ninth-ranked Michigan Sunday afternoon in the Red Foxes final game of the Marist Invite at McCann Natatorium.
Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.) had two goals and an assist, Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.) had three assists and Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) had a goal and two assists to pace the Red Foxes' offense. Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.) scored once and added four steals and a field block on defense. Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) played the entire game in goal for Marist and made 10 saves.
Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) and Desaulniers each scored in the first quarter as the Red Foxes (4-14) played the Wolverines to a 2-2 draw.
Alison Hamby again pulled Marist even at three-all, but Michigan scored the final two goals of the quarter to take a 5-3 halftime lead.
Michigan pulled away, outscoring the Red Foxes 4-0 in the third quarter.
Trailing 9-3 entering the fourth quarter, Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) one-timed a feed from Rinker less than two minutes into the period. Just over a minute later, Puccino scored to bring Marist within four at 9-5. Following a Michigan score with 1:12 left, Puccino and Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.) found the back of the net in the final minute to provide the final margin.
The Red Foxes will make their second road trip to the west coast this week, as they will play six games over spring break in California. They will play two games on Tuesday versus Indiana and Redlands before participating in the Lancer Invite, hosted by Cal Baptist, on Friday and Saturday.
