VILLANOVA, Pa. - Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) scored the winning goal in overtime to lead the Marist water polo team to their second win of the day with an 8-7 overtime victory over Wagner. Earlier in the day the Red Foxes easily defeated St. Francis (N.Y.) by a 17-3 score. Both games were played at Villanova.
The win over Wagner moved Marist (16-18, 8-2) into a tie with the Seahawks as both teams have two conference losses heading into the final day of the regular season. They trail Iona who only has one loss, but play Wagner today.
Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.) scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead the Red Foxes' offense against Wagner. Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.) also scored and made five steals on defense. Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) had a goal and an assist while making three steals and two field blocks. Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.) had three assists and Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) made 11 saves in goal.
Trailing 4-3 at halftime, Marist scored three times in the third quarter to pull even. After each team scored once in the fourth quarter. Hamby scored the game-winner in the second overtime session.
In their earlier game, the Red Foxes cruised to a 17-3 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.). Puccino and Rinker led the way with three goals and two assists each. Desaulniers, Yuriria Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) and Kathryn Knutson (Oakland, Calif.) all also scored twice. Thomas made 13 saves in the Marist net.
Marist led 5-2 after the first quarter and 11-2 at halftime.
The Red Foxes will look to close out the season with a .500 record as they play their last two regular season games on Sunday. They will play take on Villanova at 10:30 a.m. before playing Siena at 4:30. Both games will take place at Villanova.
