POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist water polo team concluded their 2012 season Sunday afternoon, defeating Villanova 14-7 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) consolation game at the McCann Natatorium. The Red Foxes were the second seed while the
Wildcats were seeded fourth.
Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) led the Red Foxes offense with three goals and four assists for seven points. She also had a career day on defense with 11 steals. Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.) also had a hat trick and added an assist. Jessica Hamby and Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) each scored twice, Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.) had a goal and an assist and Mackenzie Maynes (Newcastle, Wash.) had three assists. Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) made four saves while playing the first half in net and Elise Humphries (Anaheim, Calif.) played the second half, stopping two shots while also making two steals.
Marist (19-19, 10-2 MAAC) scored three goals to start the second quarter, two by Puccino and one by Kline, to break a 2-2 tie and take the lead for good. They led 7-4 at halftime and 8-4 after the third quarter.
Following the championship game, which saw the top-seeded Iona Gaels defeat Wagner, the third seed, 10-9 in overtime, Kline was named to the All-Tournament Team
The Red finished the season at .500 with a 19-19 overall record. They were 10-2 in the MAAC, earning them the second seed in the tournament.
