RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Katie Estes (Saugus, Calif.) had a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs, but the Marist volleyball team fell in four sets to Manhattan 3-1 (24-26, 25-14, 25-17, 25-21) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match on Saturday afternoon.
Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) had nine kills, her third straight match with at least that many, and registered six blocks to extend her conference lead in that category. Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) had seven kills, six blocks, five service aces and 21 assists and Audra Brady had 22 helpers. Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) led Marist with 15 digs, one of four Red Foxes with double digits in digs. Brady had 13 to match Estes and Gena Russo (Rensselaer, N.Y.) added 12.
Stephens and Stoiberg got the blocking started right off the bat, giving Marist (4-9, 0-3 MAAC) a 1-0 lead in the first set. A Brady ace extended the lead to 2-0, but Manhattan (6-8, 1-2 MAAC) responded with three straight points to jump ahead. Back-to-back kills by Stephens and Stoiberg gave the lead back to the Red Foxes, but only briefly. An 8-2 run by the Jaspers put them ahead by an 11-6 score. A kill by Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Co.) started a 3-1 response by Marist, which included a kill by Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio), to cut the deficit to 12-9. Manhattan extended their lead to 19-12 before the Red Foxes went on a streak of five straight points to pull within two at 19-17. Estes and Shaw each had a kill to start the run before Stoiberg recorded back-to-back aces. With the score at 21-18, Marist against went on a run, this time scoring four straight points on a kill by Lahey and a kill and ace from Marisa Gilber (Pflugerville, Texas), to take a late lead at 22-21. A 3-1 run by the Jaspers gave them set point at 24-23, but Stoiberg hit three straight kills to not only save the set, but win it, 26-24, for the Red Foxes.
Marist again jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second set on kill by Stephens and another block combination from Stoiberg and Stephens. Manhattan would respond, however, with a 16-5 run to take a commanding 16-7 lead. The Red Foxes could not get any closer than eight points the rest of the set as the Jaspers took the second frame 25-14.
Manhattan continued that momentum into the third set as they never let Marist take a lead. An Estes' kill and Jaspers' error tied the score at four, but Manhattan responded with a 13-5 run to take control at 17-9. The Red Foxes made a run, closing to within five at 20-15 on kills by Stephens and Becca Jones (Arlington, Va.) and another block from Stephens and Stoiberg, but could not get any closer as Manhattan too the third set 25-17.
The Jaspers again jumped ahead in the fourth set, taking an early 8-3 lead. A 13-6 run by the Red Foxes gave them a 16-14 advantage for the first time since early in the second set. Estes had five kills in the streak and added a block with Gilbert. Stephens, Stoiberg and Gilbert all added kills and Stoiberg again had back-to-back services. With a 19-18 Marist lead however, Manhattan went on a 5-1 run to take a late 23-20 advantage. After another Estes kill, the Jaspers finished off the match with two straight points.
The Red Foxes are right back at it on the road Sunday with a 2 p.m. match at Saint Peter's.
