Water Polo Defeats Iona, Wins Two More MAAC Games

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Marist water polo team won two more conference games on Sunday, including defeating the two-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) champions Iona in their home pool. The Red Foxes (21-10, 7-1 MAAC) defeated St. Francis 10-4 in the first game of the day before coming from behind to beat the host Gaels 8-7.

GAME ONE: MARIST 10 – ST. FRANCIS 4

Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) and Yuriria Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) each had three goals and an assist. Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.) had five points on a goal and four assists. Anna-Lena Hathaway (Pasadena, Calif.) had two goals, an assist and five steals and Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) scored once and assisted on another. Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) made 14 saves and three steals in goal for the Red Foxes.

Marist exploded for four goals in the second quarter to increase a 2-1 lead to 6-2 at halftime. The defense only allowed one goal between the second and third quarters.  

GAME TWO: MARIST 8 – IONA 7

Hamby and Hathaway each had three points on two goals and an assist. Mackenzie Maynes (Newcastle, Wash.) had a goal and two assists and Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.), Chavez and Brooke Else (Lansdale, Pa.) all scored a goal and assisted on another. Hamby, Hathaway and Else all tied for the team lead with four steals. Thomas had her second double digit save effort of the day with 11 stops and three more steals.

The Red Foxes trailed 1-0 after the first quarter and 3-1 at the midway point before coming back to tie the score at five after three quarters. They then outscored the Gaels 3-2 in the final period to earn their second win of the season over the defending champs.

Marist will next play on Saturday, April 13 at St. Francis. The Red Foxes will play VMI at 11:30 a.m. and Siena at 4 p.m. The regular season will conclude the following day at Wagner where Marist will play Villanova and the Seahawks.
