POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team welcomes Devon Tomson and Deven Connelly as new assistant coaches for the 2013 season.
Tomson is the former head men's soccer coach at nearby Bard College, and assistant coach at Division III UC Santa Cruz. He received his Masters Degree in Physical Education & Coaching from Canisius College and holds his USSF B License in coaching as well.
While at UC Santa Cruz, Tomson helped bring the program to two NCAA Tournament births, graduate three professional players, 15 NSCAA Academic All Americans, and three NCAA All West Region players. Outside of his duties with UC Santa Cruz, Tomson was an active club coach with both Red Star Soccer Club where he won a State Cup Championship in 2012. Tomson also help run Catalyst Soccer Club, US Soccer News “Best Ideas of the Decade, 2008” for former US Head Men's National Team Coach Steve Sampson.
Outside of his duties with the Red Foxes, Tomson will be heading up contact with the Hudson Valley's local youth soccer programs, organizing all Red Fox Soccer Camps, and helping build Red Fox Soccer as a staple of the Hudson Valley.
Connelly was the goalkeeper at Bard College where he recorded 71 career starts and was a captain during his senior season. He named to the All-Skyline Conference first team after the 2010 season and the Liberty League defender of the week during his senior campaign.
Connelly served as the Bard men's soccer first assistant for the 2012-2013 season where he was responsible for scouting and recruiting players, running preseason team practices, and performing specialized goalkeeper workouts and drills. He also coached the Bard Youth soccer camp for two years. He received his NSCAA Goalkeeping Diploma Levels 1 and 2.
Head coach Matt Viggiano is excited to have the new coaches on board. He's hopeful their presence will make a positive impact on the team.
“I'm very pleased to have both of them join the staff,” said Viggiano. “The new blood is great for both the team and myself. I feel the group will benefit greatly from their past experiences and soccer knowledge.”
The Red Foxes will open their 2013 campaign on Friday, Aug. 30 on the road at UC Irvine. They will play their first home contest on Saturday, Sep. 14 against New Hampshire at 7 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. For the complete 2013 Marist men's soccer schedule, please click here.
