VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Marist men's soccer team lost a tough contest against Villanova Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0. Goalkeeper Anthony Sokalski (London, Ontario) recorded six saves.
“We got to catch a break,” said head coach Matt Viggiano. “We were shorthanded today due to injuries, including four starters. We need to stay healthy.”
The Red Foxes dominated play in the first period with a strong defensive performance and seven attempted shots by six players. The match was a draw heading into halftime, tied at zero.
The Wildcats came out fighting in the second half, scoring two goals in the first five minutes of play. The third and final goal came in the 73rd minute. Marist took nine shots in the second period but were unable to convert. Freshman Tudor Brata (Baia Mare, Romania) had four shots on goal in his first collegiate start.
“I believe we carried the game in the first half,” said Viggiano. “They became more direct in the second half and scored a quick two goals after halftime. We have to learn the lesson to play for the full length of the game.”
The men return to competition on Wednesday September 11 when they face Army on the road at 7 p.m. The home opener for the Red Foxes is on Saturday September 14 at 7 p.m. against New Hampshire at Tenney Stadium.
