DeLAND, Fla. - Fifth-year senior wide receiver Armani Martin (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) set Marist's career record for touchdown receptions, but the Marist football team suffered a 22-14 loss at Stetson in a Pioneer Football League contest on Saturday.
Stetson struck first with a one-yard touchdown run by Cole Mazza on its opening drive, and a two-point conversion run by kicker Grant Amick gave the Hatters an 8-0 lead with 11:44 left in the first quarter. Five plays after senior Vinny Fuschetto (New Providence, N.J.) recovered a muffed punt, Martin's record touchdown reception came on a nine-yard pass from sophomore Anthony Francis (Providence, R.I.) with 7:36 left in the first quarter.
On Stetson's next drive, senior free safety Zach Adler (Walden, N.Y.) intercepted a pass, his seventh of the season, which tied a single-season program record set by Rory Foley in 2008.
The score remained 8-7 Stetson until Marist's final drive of the first half. An 18-yard touchdown pass from Francis to senior wide receiver Matt Tralli (Croton, N.Y.) with 16 seconds left in the half gave Marist a 14-8 lead, and capped a 12-play, 70-yard drive.
On the final play of the third quarter, Stetson quarterback Ryan Tentler completed a 78-yard pass to Kegan Moore, which put the ball on the Marist 1. Mazza barreled in for a one-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter, and the PAT gave Stetson the lead for good at 15-14. A.J. Washington added an eight-yard touchdown run with 3:09 to play for the game's final points.
Defensively for Marist, fifth-year senior linebacker Paul Sakowski (Chester, N.Y.) had a team-high 13 tackles, including one for a loss of yardage. Senior defensive end Demetrius Williams (Chester, Pa.) was a disruptive force with six tackles, including three-and-a-half stops for loss, one-and-a-half sacks and a pass break-up. Offensively, fifth-year senior running back Atiq Lucas (Coram, N.Y.) ran for 70 yards on 18 carries. Tralli had team highs with five receptions for 46 yards, and Francis finished 14-for-32 for114 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He was sacked five times.
For Stetson, Mazza ran for 97 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns. Tentler finished 13-for-19 for 187 yards and an interception. Moore had 104 receiving yards on three receptions. Defensively, safety Donald Payne had 21 tackles, including three for loss, half-a-sack and a forced fumble.
Marist fell to 3-7 overall and 3-4 in the PFL. Stetson improved to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in league play.

Notes: The previous Marist career receiving touchdown record was held by Michael Rios, who had 17. … With one game left in his career, Martin has 1,862 receiving yards. Currently, three Marist receivers (James LaMacchia, Guy Smith, Michael Rios) have 2,000 career receiving yards. … Matt Tralli now has 62 receptions this season, which is tied for the second-highest single-season total in program history. … Adler now has 15 career interceptions, three behind Mario Wilson for first place in program history. … After Stetson's touchdown on its opening drive, the Hatters had seven total yards the next eight times they had the ball. … This is the first time in Marist's six seasons in the league that the Red Foxes finish with a sub-.500 record in PFL road games (1-2).
