JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Marist softball team split its doubleheader against Jacksonville University to end the its Spring Break road trip in Florida. The Red Foxes fell to the Dolphins 10-8 in the first game, before the team defeated Jacksonville 7-2 to cap off the day.

Game One

In the first inning, junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.) homered to left field to also bat in sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.). The Dolphins answered with a stellar seven-run inning in the first.

The Red Foxes brought the game within one in the fourth inning. Freshman Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) homered to center field to draw in two runs. With a walk from Kuzma, junior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) scored to bring it within two. Before finishing the top of the inning, senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) flied out to left field to advance sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) to home plate.

After Jacksonville added another run to close out the fourth inning, Marist tacked on another run from a solo homer by freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.). The Dolphins went on to post two runs in the sixth, forcing the Red Foxes to catch up by three. Korak would home again to left field to bring Marist within one, but that was as close as the team would get.

Korak led the Red Foxes with three hits and three runs, while Kuzma tallied three RBI's. Defensively, Freeman claimed five putouts, while Van Natta notched three assists. Oberdorf took the loss, compiling seven earned runs, three strikeouts, and one walk in four innings pitched. In total, Marist posted nine hits in the outing, only committing one error in the game.

Game Two

The game remained scoreless in the first, as Marist put itself on the board as Van Natta was walked with the bases loaded. The Dolphins responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie it.

Marist opened the scoring in the fifth inning to claim the lead for the game. Senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) doubled to right center with the bases loaded to bat in sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.), Korak and Kuzma. Zahka notched a run for Marist after Duddy reached on an error.

The Red Foxes went on to add two more runs in the sixth as Korak homered for the third time today to bat in Kuzma as well. Jacksonville would add a run in the bottom of the seventh, but that was as close as they would get.

Korak led Marist with two hits in the outing, while the scoring was spread between four Red Foxes. Zahka compiled three RBI's for Marist, as the team posted five hits and only four strikeouts in the second game. Defensively, Zahka led with four putouts, as senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.) had assists. Lalli claimed the victory for Marist as she improved her record to 2-3.
