DeLand, Fla. – The Marist softball team fell to Stetson today in a doubleheader. In the first game, the Red Foxes lost 8-5 and lost a close matchup in the second game, 2-1.
Game One
To kick off the first game, Marist posted three runs in the first inning. A double to left center from junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.) score sophomores Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) and Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.). Kuzma went on to score as well from a single to right center from senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.).
Stetson went on to claim the lead in the bottom of the first. The Red Foxes took a one-run lead in the top off the fourth inning. Van Natta singled to left field to score freshman Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah) and senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.). Stetson then tallied a run in the fourth to tie the score, and three in the sixth to take the lead.
Van Natta led Marist with two hits and two RBI's, while Kuzma also tallied two RBI's in the outing. On the defensive side, senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) posted six putouts and Van Natta compiled three of the Red Foxes' seven assists.
Marist notched five hits in 26 at bats, leaving seven on base throughout the game. Senior Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) took the loss, as she allowed nine hits and seven earned runs in six innings pitched.
Game Two
Marist fell by one in the second game of the doubleheader, as the matchup was low scoring. Stetson posted a run in both the second and third innings to claim the lead they would maintain throughout the game.
Marist brought it within one with a run in the sixth inning off of a throwing error by the second baseman to score Kuzma. This was as close as Marist would get, as Stetson would seal the victory in the seventh.
The Red Foxes compiled seven hits in the outing as Zahka and Van Natta each tallied two. Defensively, Marist claimed seven assists and committed no errors. Junior Melanie White (Highlands Ranch, Colo) took the loss for the team, adding three strikeouts to the board, allowing eight hits in six innings.
The Red Foxes move on to face off against Jacksonville University in a doubleheader that starts at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
