LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Marist men's tennis team swept Rider on Thursday night, 7-0. Today's win over the Broncs moves Marist to 4-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
The Red Foxes are on a 28 match MAAC winning streak during regular season play. The last regular season conference match Marist lost was on Wednesday, Apr. 8, 2009. With today's win, Marist improves to a record-setting 116-6 mark in MAAC play under head coach Tim Smith.
“This match gave us the opportunity to play more players on our team that need match play experience,” Smith. “We decided to leave some players home because we didn't want them to miss classes. Bjerke at third singles recorded a golden bagel, meaning he did not lose any points. We mixed the doubles teams up a little bit and we came away with our first outdoor win of the spring season. I'm excited about the next MAAC match with Fairfield next week.”
Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) cruised by Rollie Malfitano, 6-1, 6-2. Junior Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) posted a 6-0, 6-4 win at second doubles over Chanton Phan. Sophomore Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) blanked Nick Lubold, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Jacob Solly (Sydney, Australia) earned a near perfect 6-0, 6-1 victory over Matthew Begley. Sophomore Joe Motta (Staten Island, N.Y.) completed the singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ed Chogllo.
Marist also claimed all three doubles matches over Rider. The duo of Rossi and Bjerke defeated Lubold and Malfitano, 6-2. Freshman Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) and sophomore Julien Hochner (Nice, France) posted a 6-1 decision over Phan and Adam Levi. Solly and Motta kept the streak alive with a perfect 6-0 victory over Begley and Sean Sweeney.
Marist returns to action on Sunday, Mar. 30 at Hofstra. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
