POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist softball team (12-17, 3-0 MAAC) swept Army (17-20, 5-4 Patriot League) in a non-conference doubleheader today. The Red Foxes posted a shutout in game one, defeating the Black Knights 7-0. In game two, Marist defeated Army 8-4.

Game One

In game one, the Red Foxes kicked off the scoring in the first inning. Sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) notched the first run on the board, before sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.) nailed a two-run homer to right center to put Marist up 3-0.

The Red Foxes went on to score two more as junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.) forced a difficult play at second to claim a single, while scoring senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) and Duddy.

In the bottom of the sixth, Zahka notched a solo home run, her second of the season. The Red Foxes tacked on another run as Duddy doubled to right center, scoring senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.). Marist entered the top of the seventh with a 7-0 lead over the Black Knights, in which Army would catch up no further.

Duddy led the Red Foxes with three hits, while also posting two runs in the outing. Zahka also added two runs to the scoreboard for Marist, as Kuzma and Cheek compiled two RBIs each. Junior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) took the win, improving her record to 5-3. In five innings, Lalli only allowed one hit while claiming two strikeouts in the shutout. Defensively, senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) posted nine putouts as Birnbaum had five assists.

The Red Foxes committed no errors in the matchup, as the team compiled eight hits throughout the victory.

Game Two

The Red Foxes put themselves on the board first in game two, as Marist took a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Duddy scored for Marist as Klemmer singled to left center to post the RBI. Freshman Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) singled to third base to add the team's second run as Kuzma scored.

The Black Knights answered back in the top of the second, posting four runs in six hits to take a 4-2 lead over Marist for the first time of the day.

In the bottom of the fourth, freshman Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah) added another run for Marist as sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) singled to right field. With the bases loaded, Cheek was hit by a pitch as Duddy tallied another run for the Red Foxes and tied the matchup at four-all. Marist reclaimed the lead off of a double from Zahka, as Van Natta and Kuzma crossed the plate for the Red Foxes. The team entered the top of the fifth up 6-4.

The Red Foxes tallied another two runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Kuzma singled to right center scoring Barrera and Lalli to give Marist an 8-4 lead. The Black Knights would come no closer as the Red Foxes would sweep Army for the day.

Duddy led Marist again, posting two hits and two runs in the game. Also for Marist, Kuzma and Barrera added two runs, while Zahka posted two RBIs. Senior Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) notched the win for the Red Foxes, compiling no earned runs and five strikeouts in five innings. She has now improved her record to 6-4 this season.

The Red Foxes head to Rider tomorrow for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
