WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Marist softball team (14-20, 5-3 MAAC) faced off against the Monmouth Hawks (11-16, 3-5 MAAC) for the first time since 1997 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader today. The Red Foxes dropped the first game 6-3 against the Hawks, before shutting them out 12-0 in game two.
Game One
To kick off the game, Marist loaded the bases with two walked batters and one hit by a pitch. Sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) stole home on a passed ball to post the first lead of the game. The Red Foxes retired the first three batters up in the bottom of the first as junior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) posted two strikeouts to kick off the defensive end for Marist.
Monmouth tied the game in the bottom of the second off of a sacrifice fly. The Red Foxes reclaimed the lead in the top of third, as runners posted up at first and third after the Hawks committed an error at first. Freshman Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) nailed a line drive that was fumbled by the short stop to score senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) and sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.).
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the third, the Hawks tied the game with a two-run RBI double to enter the fourth at three-all. In the bottom of the fourth, Klemmer kept the game tied, making a diving catch at first base to hold a runner at third. The Hawks would leave her on base, as Zahka made the out at first to close out the inning.
The Hawks came up big in the sixth, starting off the inning with a triple to right center. The runner would go on to score for the Hawks to claim a 4-3 lead over Marist. Monmouth added two more runs off an RBI single to right field. Junior Melanie White (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) would come in to pitch for the Red Foxes, as the Hawks had runners on both corners with two outs. She would close out the inning as the batter went down looking. Marist entered the top of the seventh down 6-3.
To start off the seventh, Van Natta would walk and freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.) would single to short stop, but Marist would get no closer as the Hawks clinched a victory over the Red Foxes.
Freeman led Marist with two hits and two RBIs in the outing. Defensively, Klemmer posted five putouts, while Zahka and senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.) had two assists each. Lalli took the loss for Marist, tallying five strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

In the top of the third, the Red Foxes loaded the bases as Korak doubled to left field with only one out. Klemmer stepped up to the plate to nail a grand slam, claiming five of the Red Foxes' seven RBIs in the first three innings. Sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.) got involved in the home run action, as she notched a two-run homer to center field to give the Red Foxes a 7-0 lead.
The Red Foxes would go on to load the bases in the top of the fourth with no outs. There were two forced outs at the plate before Kuzma hustled to score as Monmouth lost track of the play. Freeman went on to knock in two runs with a base hit as Marist boasted a 10-0 lead to close out the fourth.
