POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist softball team (16-20, 7-3 MAAC) hosted Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Niagara (12-23, 2-8 MAAC) today. The Red Foxes claimed game one with a 7-6 come-from-behind victory, before taking game two with a 4-2 win.

Game One

The Red Foxes kicked off the day battling back from a six-run deficit, to post seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal their sixth MAAC victory of the season.

In the top of the third, senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.1-4) kept the matchup scoreless, as Bridget Hogan doubled to right center and Birnbaum made the throw to sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.) to tag her out at third.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth, when the Purple Eagles capitalized on a double to left center to score the team's first run. The Purple Eagles tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth with a three-run homer, as well as another two runs in the sixth to give Niagara a 6-0 lead.

Marist would come back to rally in the bottom of the sixth to claim the lead.

The Red Foxes notched a run to the score board, as freshman Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) singled to left field to bat in freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.). Marist went on to load the bases and tallied another run when Birnbaum was hit by a pitch. After sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) worked the 3-2 count, she singled to right field to draw in pinch runner Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) and Cheek to bring the matchup within two (6-4). Sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) nailed a three-run homer to score the leading run for the Red Foxes.

Duddy led the Red Foxes with three hits in the outing, while senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) notched two for Marist as well. Van Natta posted three RBIs for the team, while Duddy claimed two in the victory. Senior Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) took the win for the Red Foxes, improving her overall record to 9-5, while junior Melanie White (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) collected the save. Lewis compiled three strikeouts in 5.2 innings as White clinched her first save of the season with one strikeout and no hits in the final 1.1 innings.

Game Two

The Red Foxes kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first of game two, as Duddy stole home to post a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles. In the bottom of the second, senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) added the Red Foxes' second run with a solo home run to right center.

Marist kept the runs coming in the bottom of the third as Klemmer doubled to right field for Van Natta to register a run. In the bottom of the fifth, Van Natta got involved in the home run action, knocking a solo shot over left center to give Marist a 4-0 lead.

The Purple Eagles posted two runs in the top of the sixth off of a home run to left field, cutting Marist's lead to 4-2. Niagara would get no closer though, as the Red Foxes swept them in the doubleheader.

Van Natta and Zahka led the Red Foxes with two hits and a solo home run apiece. Lalli claimed the victory for Marist, retiring four batters and allowing only two earned runs. She now claims a season record of 6-5.

Next up, the Red Foxes will head to UMass on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
