POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist Water Polo team (20-17, 11-3 MAAC) fell to the Wagner Seahawks (25-11, 12-1) 9-7 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship Finals game today.
Junior Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) led the Red Foxes in the outing with three goals.
Halfway through the first quarter, Levien found the back of the net to notch the first goal for Marist. Wagner answered back in the next possession before Chavez netted a goal for Marist to maintain the lead. Before the end of the first, Wagner tied the matchup at two-all with a six-on-five opportunity.
Levien kicked off the scoring in the second quarter as well, giving Marist the 3-2 lead. Wagner responded with two goals to claim its first lead of the game. Levien clinched the hat trick, posting her third goal of the game, tying the matchup at four.
Freshman Nastassia McGlothlin (Mission, Viejo, Calif.) notched a goal for the Red Foxes, but Wagner posted three goals in the third quarter to give the Seahawks a 7-5 lead.
Bringing the Red Foxes within one, senior Yuriria Chavez claimed a goal to start off the fourth quarter. With just under five minutes remaining, the Seahawks nabbed another goal before junior Anna-Lena Hathaway notched a goal to the scoreboard to bring Marist within one (8-7). The Seahawks went on to increase their lead to two again, as the Red Foxes trailed 9-7 with under a minute remaining. Marist would get no closer, as the Seahawks clinched the Championship title.
After the conclusion of the tournament, Levien and Jessica Hamby were both named to the MAAC All-Tournament team for their performances over the weekend.
