VERONA, N.Y. – The Marist men's tennis team picked up their first win of the spring session as they defeated the reigning Northeast Conference Champions, Bryant, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Turning Stone Casino.
"Anytime you beat a Division I qualifier you should feel good about your win,” head coach Tim Smith said. “Because of the parity on this team, we need different players to step up at different times and that's exactly what happened today against Bryant.”
The Red Foxes pulled out two victories in doubles and five total singles victories. The team of junior's Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) and Joe Motta (Staten Island, N.Y.) defeated Bulldogs sophomore Oliver Welsh and senior Ernesto Arguello, 6-4.
The Red Fox team of freshman Justin Chanthalangsy (San Marcos, Calif.) and senior captain Matteo Guidici (Parma, Italy) bounced back from a loss to Binghamton yesterday to earn a 7-6(3) win over Bryant's team of freshman Matt Kuhar and junior Richard Sipala.
On the singles side of things, senior Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.), freshman Timo Tanzer (Auvernier, Switzerland), Chanthalangsy and Guidici all picked up wins in today's matches.
“We won the key doubles point in a tiebreaker with Giudici and Chanthalangsy and although we lost one and two singles, our three through six guys really showed up,” Smith said. “In particular, Joe Dube, Matteo Giudici, and Justin Chanthalangsy deserve special kudos for their effort today."
The Red Foxes head home from a successful weekend up near Syracuse for their first home session of the spring season as they take on Georgetown at the Dutchess Racquet Club on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1 P.M.
