BUIES CREEK, North Carolina -?The Marist football team earned its first Pioneer Football League victory of the season on Saturday night with a 13-10 triumph at Campbell.

Junior kicker Mike Maccarone accounted for the winning margin with a 28-yard field goal with 7:49 to play, which was the game's final score.

Sophomore quarterback Michael White threw for 223 yards. Junior running back Marcellus Calhoun ran for 56 yards and a touchdown. Fifth-year senior wide receiver Matt Tralli caught a team-high five passes for 58 yards, and sophomore wide receiver Malik Simmons caught three passes for a team-best 60 yards. Sophomore safety Jordyn Jean-Felix led the Red Foxes with seven tackles, including one for a loss and one pass break-up.

The Red Foxes forced three turnovers, and did not commit a turnover themselves. The Marist defense received interceptions from sophomore cornerback Brandon Miller, fifth-year senior free safety Zach Adler and sophomore free safety Wesley Beans.

Maccarone opened the scoring with a 28-yard field goal at the 5:36 mark of the first quarter, and capped a 16-play, 69-yard drive. Campbell took the lead with exactly one minute left in the first period on a four-yard touchdown run by quarterback Kameron Bryant.

Campbell still held a 7-3 lead late in the second quarter, when the Fighting Camels took over at their own 20 with 2:10 to play. Seven plays moved the ball to the Marist 14, but Miller intercepted a pass in the end zone with 23 seconds left until the half.

Campbell then received the second-half kickoff. On the second play of its drive, Adler intercepted a pass at his own 40, and returned it 27 yards. After two penalties, White connected with freshman wide receiver Juston Christian on a 36-yard completion to the Campbell 2. After an offsides penalty against Campbell moved the ball to the one, Calhoun's one-yard plunge gave Marist a 10-7 lead.

A 37-yard field goal by Mitchell Brown with 12:52 remaining tied the score at 10 apiece. The Red Foxes then answered with a 12-play, 64-yard drive, which was punctuated by Maccarone's 28-yard field goal with 7:49 left.

On its ensuing drive, Campbell drove the ball to the Marist 23, but the Red Foxes stuffed the Fighting Camels on third and fourth down plays when they needed just one yard for a first down.

Marist got the ball back at its 23 with 4:13 left, and chewed up three-and-a-half minutes of clock before a 38-yard punt by Maccarone gave Campbell the ball at its own 14 with no timeouts and 43 seconds left. On the fifth play of the drive, Beans intercepted a pass on the right sideline with seven seconds left to preserve the victory.

Marist is now 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the PFL. Campbell is 3-3 overall, and 1-2 in league play.

Marist has a bye next week, and then returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Davidson. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
