DAVIDSON, North Carolina - Fifth-year senior wide receiver Matt Tralli became the Marist football program's all-time leader in receptions in the Red Foxes' 31-10 triumph at Davidson in a Pioneer Football League contest on Saturday.
Tralli broke the record of 176, previously held by James LaMacchia. He caught seven passes for 84 yards in the game, and now has 181 career receptions.
Freshman wideout Juston Christian caught 11 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Michael White threw for 271 yards and a touchdown. Senior running back Garrett Clay ran for 54 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, freshman linebacker Blaise Spinelli had a team-best seven tackles, including two-and-a-half for a loss of yardage. Senior safety Michael Marston had one-and-a-half sacks, and fifth-year senior defensive end Demetrius Williams had two-and-a-half stops behind the line of scrimmage.
After spotting Davidson a 10-0 lead, the Red Foxes scored 31 unanswered points, with 21 coming in the second half. The Wildcats began their first drive at the Marist 28, and five plays later, Trevor Smith's 29-yard field goal accounted for the game's first score with 11:39 left in the first quarter. Following a Marist punt, Davidson started its next drive at its own 8. On a third down play, quarterback Taylor Mitchell eluded pressure, and found William Morris down the right sideline for a 92-yard touchdown pass with 8:50 left in the first quarter.
After the score, Davidson did not cross the Marist side of midfield until the third quarter, and did not get past the Marist 30 for the rest of the game.
Marist punted on its first five drives, but got on the scoreboard with 13:19 left in the second quarter on an eight-yard touchdown pass from White to Christian. Junior kicker Mike Maccarone then evened the score with a 33-yard field goal, which capped a 12-play drive with 4:45 left in the second quarter.
The game turned late in the third quarter, when the Red Foxes scored two touchdowns in 22 seconds. Senior defensive end Landon Moore recovered a fumble at the Davidson 25. Two plays later, junior running back Marcellus Calhoun scored on a 14-yard scamper down the left sideline, which gave Marist its first lead with 4:58 remaining. On Davidson's next play from scrimmage, junior cornerback Cameron Gibson intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards to the Davidson 12. Clay then ran for a touchdown on the next play from scrimmage.
Clay's five-yard touchdown run with 11:28 left closed out the scoring, and capped an 11-play, 84-yard drive.
The victory was Marist's second straight. The Red Foxes are now 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the PFL. Davidson fell to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in league play.
Marist will be back in action next Saturday, when the Red Foxes host Butler in a PFL contest. Kickoff is set for noon. Tickets are available for purchase on GoRedFoxes.com.
