SAN DIEGO, California - The Marist football team suffered a 30-27 loss at San Diego in a Pioneer Football League game on Saturday.
Marist scored 20 unanswered points to grab a 20-7 lead in the second quarter. The Red Foxes scored touchdowns on their first three drives of the game. But the Toreros responded with 23 unanswered points.
Junior running back Marcellus Calhoun gained 104 yards on 12 carries. Sophomore quarterback Michael White threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Lawrence Dickens caught three passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman wide receiver Juston Christian had a team-high 95 yards receiving and a touchdown on three catches, and fifth-year senior wide receiver Joshua Royce had a team-high four catches.
Defensively, senior safety Michael Marston led the Red Foxes with a career-high 14 tackles in his first career start. Fifth-year senior linebacker Miguel Sandoval totaled a career-high 13 stops, with one-and-a-half coming for a loss of yardage.
On the opening drive of the game, San Diego drove 75 yards in 10 plays, and punctuated the drive with a six-yard scoring run by Dallas Kessman. However, Marist responded as White connected with Dickens on two first-quarter touchdown passes, covering eight and 63 yards, in the span of two-and-a-half minutes.
Marist led 13-7 entering the second quarter, and expanded its lead to 20-7 on a one-yard scoring run by senior running back Garrett Clay. The drive covered 95 yards on eight plays, and was set up by a 51-yard Calhoun run, which brought the ball to the San Diego 1. With 4:47 left in the first half, San Diego cut its deficit to 20-13 on a five-yard touchdown run by quarterback Anthony Lawrence.
Marist maintained its seven-point advantage until the 6:10 mark of the third quarter, when Yogi Hale intercepted a pass that was deflected, and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. San Diego then took the lead for good with 43 seconds left in the period on a five-yard touchdown pass from Lawrence to Justin Priest.
A 23-yard field goal from Jack Flatau put the Toreros up two scores at 30-20 with 5:25 remaining. On Marist's next play from scrimmage, White connected with Christian on a 77-yard touchdown pass. However, Marist did not get the ball back, as San Diego got three first downs on its ensuing drive, which covered 11 plays in 5:05.
Marist is now 1-4 overall and 0-2 in PFL play. San Diego is 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the PFL.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Campbell. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
Notes: Marist is now 0-11 against San Diego all-time. Four of the meetings occurred prior to the Red Foxes joining the PFL in the 2009 season. In the seven meetings since the Red Foxes joined the league, six have been decided by seven points or less, with the winning score coming in the final minute four times. … White and Christian connected on an 85-yard touchdown pass last week. The duo has accounted for two of the 10 longest passing touchdowns in the school's Division I history. … Dickens' two touchdowns were the first two of his career, and Clay's was the first of his career. … Fifth-year senior wide receiver Matt Tralli had one catch, which extended his streak of games with a reception to 29. He is eight catches away from tying and nine away from breaking the program's all-time record for receptions, currently held by James LaMacchia (176).
