Dayton jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead. Dayton led 7-0 before running an offensive play, as Christian Searles intercepted a pass on Marist's first drive and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown. William Will added a 37-yard field goal with 1:56 left in the first quarter, and a 16-yard touchdown run by Jack Adams just 32 to seconds into the second quarter gave the Flyers a three-score advantage.
Dayton went three-and-out on the first offensive series of the second half, and a 41-yard punt return by Matt Tralli set Marist up at the Dayton 35. Calhoun broke a 28-yard run on the first play of the drive, and his seven-yard touchdown run on the next play made the score 17-7. Marist took over at the Dayton 45 on its next series, and Calhoun had a 36-yard run on the first play of the drive. On fourth-and-goal from the 3, Calhoun was hit at the line of scrimmage, but burrowed forward for a touchdown to make the score 17-14.

On third-and-three from the Dayton 31, sophomore quarterback Michael White completed a 28-yard pass to Calhoun, and a personal foul moved the ball to the Dayton 1. Calhoun's one-yard touchdown – his third of the game -- on the next play, followed by Maccarone's point after, gave Marist the lead. But Dayton went 66 yards on six plays on its ensuing drive, which culminated in a seven-yard rushing touchdown on a quarterback keeper by Alex Jeske with 53 seconds to play. Marist drove to the Dayton 31 with five seconds remaining, but a last-ditch pass fell incomplete.
