LAWRENCEVILLE, New Jersey – The Marist women's swimming and diving team picked up its 100th program win under Head Coach Larry VanWagner and Diving Coach Melanie Bolstad with a 192-102 triumph over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Rider on Nov. 14. With the victory, the Red Foxes improved to 3-0 in conference competition.
Marist's 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Georgia Goldman, junior Isabella Morreale, sophomore Daniela Gomez and junior Meredith Wurtz broke a Coppola Pool record with a time of 1:48.81 to kick off the meet. The Red Foxes then went 1-2-3 in the next event, the 1,000-yard freestyle, with sophomore Shannon Gordon (10:51.95), sophomore Melanie Newton (11:07.07), and freshman Aileen Fitzpatrick (11:15.22) leading the way.
Senior captain Bethany Powhida set a new MAAC best time in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.12 and set a personal best in the 500-yard event (5:06.13) as well as the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.61), winning all three events. Wurtz and Morreale had a pair of first place finishes in freestyle and breaststroke events, respectively. Wurtz clocked in at 24.67 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and swam 100 yards in 53.50 seconds. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Morreale finished with a time of 1:06.57 and completed the 200-yard event in 2:26.49.
On the 1- and 3-meter diving boards, senior captain Renata Diotalevi took the top spots with scores of 256 points and 258.35 points, respectively. She led 1-2-3 finishes on both boards with freshman Lauren Katz and sophomore Megan Berardelli rounding out the top three at one meter and Katz and freshman Grace Casolo completing the Marist trifecta at three meters.
The Red Foxes will travel to Baltimore, Maryland for the H2ounds Invitational on December 4 and 5. Marist will face two MAAC opponents in Iona and Saint Peter's and will also compete against host Loyola over the weekend.
