Larry VanWagner Earns 350th Career Win As Marist Men Top Fairfield

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's swimming and diving team helped Head Coach Larry VanWagner clinch his 350th career win with a 172.5-116.5 victory over Fairfield on Nov. 6 in McCann Natatorium. With the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference triumph, the Red Foxes are 2-1 overall and remain unbeaten in conference competition.

As the men's and women's head coach at Marist, VanWagner has racked up 252 men's wins with the remaining 98 coming from the women's program. He has spent 26 of his 40 seasons working alongside Diving Head Coach Melanie Bolstad.

Marist's 'A' and 'B' 200-yard medley relay squads opened the meet with a 1-2 finish before freshman Miguel Basalo took the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:06.61.

The Red Foxes had six different individual first place winners, led by freshman Miguel Madeira. In the 100-yard backstroke, Madeira clocked in at 54.37 seconds for first place and won the 200-yard event in 1:58.72.

Freshman Daniel Knoll won the 200-yard freestyle, clocking in at 1:43.81 to help Marist open up a 91-40 lead through first seven events. Another strong showing in the freestyle group came from freshman Riley Stadel, who finished second in the 1,000- (10:08.73) and 500-yard (4:54.59) events. At the shorter distances, Manuel Garcia won the 50-yard event in 22.79 seconds and finished second at 100 yards (49.60 seconds).

Senior captain Josh Dodway took the top spot on both boards, racking up 303.67 points at one meter and 315.60 points at three meters. Sophomore Peter Gallino placed third in both events with scores of 263.02 points and 260.70 points, respectively.

Marist has a quick turnaround, as it will compete in a MAAC dual meet at Rider at 1 p.m. Nov. 14. The Broncs have won the conference title the last four seasons.
