Marist Softball Finishes 2-2 at Citrus Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Marist softball team defeated Campbell by a score of 2-1, and fell to Arkansas 9-5 in its final day of competition at the Citrus Classic. The Red Foxes finished the tournament with a 2-2 record after having defeated Virginia and falling to George Washington on Friday.

Here is a closer look at Saturday's two games:

Game One – Marist 2, Campbell 1

Sophomore Jayne Oberdorf (Greensburg, Pa.) pitched a complete game, allowed just five hits and three walks while striking out six. She held the Camels scoreless over the final six innings, which included a strikeout to end a bases-loaded rally in the Campbell sixth.

After Campbell scored its lone run in the top of the first, the Red Foxes tied the game in the third. An infield error allowed junior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) to score. The Red Foxes scored the game-winning run the following inning when sophomore infielder Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah) laid down a squeeze bunt for a single, which allowed freshman outfielder Kourtney Paul (Twinsburg, Ohio) to score.

Campbell mounted one last rally in the seventh. However, with one out, shortstop Ericka Nesbitt was thrown out trying to steal third by sophomore Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.), as Van Natta laid down the tag.

Each team finished with five hits. Marist benefitted from three Campbell errors, while the Red Foxes did not have any errors.

Game Two – Arkansas 9, Marist 5

Marist, the visiting team, jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first. Freeman drove in junior Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) with an infield single, and Gabrielle Kelliher (East Brunswick, N.J.) then came in on an error.

However, Arkansas answered in its half of the first with three runs to take the lead for good. The Razorbacks then added two in the second and four in the fifth. Kasey Fagan led the charge by going 3-for-3 with a two runs scored, an RBI, a double and a walk.

Marist fought back to close out the scoring with three runs in the top of the sixth. The frame included a two-run single by freshman Samantha Reilly (Toms River, N.J.) and an RBI single by Barrera.

Duddy went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Reilly was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the game.

Next weekend, the Red Foxes will return to action at the Seahawk Softball Spring Classic, hosted by UNC Wilmington. Marist will play five games in three days against Western Carolina, UNC Wilmington and North Carolina A&T.
