LONG BEACH, CALIF. - The Marist water polo team led in the fourth quarter over #14 Long Beach State but was defeated 8-7 on Saturday afternoon. That evening, the Red Foxes defeated Caltech by a final score of 24-4.
Game One - Long Beach State 8, Marist 7
Sophomore Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, QC) led all Red Foxes in scoring with three goals. Senior captains Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) and Anna-Lena Hathaway (South Pasadena, Calif.) contributed one goal each. Senior Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) and sophomore Nastassia McGlothlin (Mission Viejo, Calif.) rounded out the scoring for the Red Foxes.
Long Beach State scored the first goal of the game, but goals from Levien and Amorosa gave Marist a 2-1 lead halfway through the first quarter. Amorosa scored her second goal of the quarter at the 2:12 mark, but Long Beach State would answer in the final moments of the first quarter to pull back within one. The Red Foxes took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter. A goal from Hathaway and one from Long Beach State gave Marist a 4-3 advantage at the break.
The third quarter saw goals from Amorosa and Hamby, but the Red Foxes' defense gave up three goals to enter the final quarter of play with the game tied 6-6. McGlothlin scored at the 6:46 mark of the quarter to give Marist a 7-6 lead. Long Beach State would tie the game up 24 seconds later, and would secure the win with a goal late in the fourth.
Junior goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) made six saves in the loss for the Red Foxes giving up seven goals against.
Game Two - Marist 24, Caltech 4
Sophomore Molly Shamieh (Sylmar, Calif.) led the Red Foxes in scoring in the most dominant offensive performance of the season. Shamieh had a team-high five goals on seven shots. Freshman Diana Carballo (Mexico City, Mexico) contributed a career-high four goals,while senior captain Brooke Else (Lansdale, Pa.) added four goals for the Red Foxes. In total, 11 different Red Foxes had at least one goal in the win.
The Red Foxes scored first early on in the game and never looked back, tallying eight goals to Caltech's zero in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Marist added six more goals while the defense gave up three, to take a 14-3 lead at halftime.
The third quarter was no different than the previous two with the Red Foxes scoring five more goals to extend their lead to 19-3 heading into the final quarter of play. Five more goals from Marist and one more from Caltech gave the final score of 24-4.
Freshman goalie Jessica Hermosillo (La Mirada, Calif.) got the win for the Red Foxes, making eight saves and giving up four goals against.
The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, March 15 against No. 11 UC Davis. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
