ROHNERT PARK, CALIF – The Marist water polo team (8-11) defeated Sonoma State (7-14) by a score of 9-5 on Monday evening. This was the fourth game for the Red Foxes in just three days.
Senior Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Red Foxes with a season-high four goals on six shot attempts. Senior Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) added two goals, while sophomore Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, QC), and senior captains Anna-Lena Hathaway (South Pasadena, Calif.) Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) scored one goal each to round out the scoring.
Sonoma State scored first just under midway through the first quarter. The Red Foxes would answer with a goal of their own at the four minute mark when Levien scored her only goal of the day. The Hamby sisters would each tally a goal in the remaining minutes of the first to give Marist a 3-1 lead heading into the second quarter. In the third, Sonoma State got its second goal of the game off a penalty shot, and a third goal in the final 30 seconds of the quarter. J. Hamby scored her second goal, and the only Red Foxes goal of the second quarter to hold on to one goal Marist lead at halftime.
Coming out of halftime the Red Foxes started quickly with J. Hamby scoring her third goal of the day just 16 seconds into the quarter. A. Hamby, Hathaway and J. Hamby would each grab one goal in the final six minutes of the quarter to take an 8-4 lead into the final quarter of play. In the fourth, a goal from Amorosa and one from Sonoma State brought the final score to 9-4.
Junior goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) made 14 saves in the win for the Red Foxes and gave up just five goals against.
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, March 21 for their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games of the season in Loudonville, N.Y. Marist will take on VMI (6-8) at noon before taking on St. Francis (3-11) at 5:30 p.m.
