Marist Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Hampton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HAMPTON, Va. – The Marist softball swept a non-conference doubleheader at Hampton on Wednesday. The Red Foxes won the first game by a score of 6-2, and recorded an 8-0 shutout in game two.

Offensively, the Red Foxes were led by sophomore catcher Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.), who went 4-for-7 with four RBIs and two runs scored on the day.

Game One – Marist 6, Hampton 2

Freeman went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, as she homered in her second straight game. Junior center fielder Colleen McWilliams (Monrovia, Calif.) went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, a double and a sacrifice fly. Freshman third baseman Brittany Colombo (Philadelphia, Pa.) went 2-for-4, and freshman designated player Gabrielle Kelliher (East Brunswick, N.J.) doubled and scored two runs.

After Hampton scored once in the bottom of the first, Freeman tied the game with a leadoff homer in the top of the second. Junior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) then singled, stole second, reached third on an error, and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by McWilliams. The Red Foxes made it 3-1 in the third as Kelliher roped a leadoff double, and scored on a two-out single by sophomore right fielder Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.).

Freeman started another Marist rally in the sixth with a leadoff single, and scored on a two-out double by McWilliams to put the Red Foxes up 4-1. In the seventh, Freeman's two-out, two-run single brought home both Kelliher and junior first baseman Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.), which gave Marist a 6-1 advantage.

Senior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) went 6.2 innings to earn her first win of the season (1-3). Lalli held the Pirates scoreless from the second through sixth innings. In the seventh, Hampton scored once, and loaded the bases with two outs to bring the tying run to the plate. Senior Melanie White (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) came on in relief to face catcher Jessica Reiman, who was 3-for-3 at that point. White struck out Reiman looking to end the game for her first save of the season.

Jailynn Jackson (2-7) pitched a complete game for Hampton with six strikeouts.

Game Two – Marist 8, Hampton 0

White pitched a complete game shutout – her first of the season, and fifth of her career – by allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out nine. She retired the first eight Pirates she faced.

The Red Foxes pounded out 10 hits, led by Duddy, Korak and Van Natta with two apiece. Lalli and freshman catcher Samantha Reilly (Toms River, N.J.) each scored and drove in two runs.

The game was scoreless through three innings before Lalli's two-out, two-run single brought home Van Natta and Reilly in the fourth. In fifth, Marist scored three more runs with two outs. Freeman's single brought home Korak, and Reilly's second homer of the season put Marist up 5-0.

The Red Foxes then added two runs in the sixth without a hit. Colombo drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Lalli, and freshman center fielder Kourtney Paul (Twinsburg, Ohio) came in on a wild pitch. Marist closed out the scoring in the seventh, when Duddy drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Lalli.

Jecoliah Pratt (0-2) took the loss for Hampton. Pratt went the first 5.1 innings.

Marist, which has now won three straight, is 8-10 on the season. The Red Foxes return to action this weekend in a tournament hosted by the University of Virginia. Marist will face Delaware State on Friday at 5:30 p.m., and Saturday at noon. The Red Foxes will take on Virginia at 5 p.m. Saturday, and noon Sunday.
