Box Score CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Marist softball team defeated Virginia by a score of 4-1 in its final game in Virginia's tournament on Sunday.
Sophomore Jayne Oberdorf (Greeensburg, Pa.) earned a complete game victory and improved to 4-4 on the season. Oberdorf pitched a six-hitter with seven strikeouts.
Offensively for the Red Foxes, freshman catcher Samantha Reilly (Toms River, N.J.) scored three runs. Sophomore designated player Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) and senior second baseman Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) each went 2-for-3. Junior center fielder Colleen McWilliams (Monrovia, Calif.) drove in two runs. The Red Foxes drew eight walks in the game.
Marist scored first with two runs in the third. An infield single by Lalli and an error brought home Freeman, and then McWilliams brought in Reilly on a bunt.
Virginia cut its deficit in half on a home run by left fielder Megan Harris to lead off the fourth. However, the Red Foxes answered with a run in their next at bat. An infield groundout by McWilliams brought home Reilly, who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Marist closed out the scoring with a run in the seventh. Reilly drew a leadoff walk, and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah).
Alex Formby (1-9), who went the first three innings, took the loss for Virginia.
Marist now stands at 9-13 overall. Virginia fell to 7-25.
Marist returns to action on Thursday, when the Red Foxes play a non-conference doubleheader at Hartford. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
